There is no upcoming S.O.N.A.R. playtest to wait for. The developers described the September 24–28, 2026 window as the final playtest, and the studio's recap of it went up on September 28. What replaced it is a free demo on Steam, and the full game is listed for October 29, 2026.

The playtest windows that actually ran

The Steam announcements give the dates, so you can check whether you missed one:

WindowDatesWhat was in it
Playtest #3September 10–14, 2026Treasure Recovery Station, single-player tutorial, performance and bug-fix pass
Final playtest ("The Last Playtest")September 24–28, 20264v4 Team Deathmatch between two submarines, plus a new co-op mission and a Discord crew championship

The recap for the last one reports over 150,000 playtest requests and more than 85,000 people playing, with an average playtime of about 1.5 hours. Those two figures side by side are the clearest signal that a request did not automatically mean a place in that window — more people asked than got in, and the numbers are the studio's own.

S.O.N.A.R. - Submarine Operators Not Actually Ready How you got in, and who was doing the accepting

How you got in, and who was doing the accepting

Access ran through Steam's own request system rather than through keys handed out by hand. Abylight's own post about the playtest lays out the path it used:

  1. Open the official S.O.N.A.R. page on Steam.
  2. Find the "Join the S.O.N.A.R. Playtest" section on that page.
  3. Click Request Access.
  4. Watch for a Steam notification or email saying access was granted and the build could be downloaded.

So the accepting was done through Steam's playtest sign-up flow, with Abylight Barcelona running the tests themselves — not a public key drop and not a Discord application. The same post asks players to wishlist the game, since the team is small.

One timing note if you read that post: it was published in July 2026 and mentions a full release in 2027, while the Steam store page lists October 29, 2026. Treat the Steam listing and the later announcements as the current schedule.

What to play instead

The playtest gap is filled by a free demo that has been downloadable from Steam since September 30, 2026. It includes the single-player tutorial and two selected missions, and the Steam Next Fest version (event dates October 19–26, 2026) added a new 1–4 player co-op mission, training stations, and unlockable uniforms, weapons, food and hats.

Demo builds were numbered in the 0.9.x range — the changelog posts name v0.9.41.0 and v0.9.44.0 — and that changelog mentions a reworked navigation station, a weapon station that can launch a decoy against torpedoes, and a swapped second mission. Playtest build numbers were not published, so don't assume a specific playtest build matches a demo version you may have read about.

If the demo won't download or launch, ordinary Steam-side checks are the sensible first move: confirm Steam is updated, verify the game files, and check that your PC meets the listed Windows 10/11 64-bit requirements. Those are general suggestions, not a fix the developers have confirmed for any specific issue.

For the full picture of the game's schedule and content, see the official Steam page; the playtest sign-up post itself is on Abylight's site, and the dated windows and recap are in the Steam news feed.

S.O.N.A.R. - Submarine Operators Not Actually Ready FAQ

FAQ

When will the playtest be ready, and who will be accepting?

There is no later playtest to prepare for: the developers called the September 24–28, 2026 window their final playtest, and sign-ups ran through the Request Access button on the Steam page, with Steam notifying you when access was granted.

Do I need a key or a Discord sign-up to join a test?

No. Abylight's post says plainly that you don't need a secret code — you request access on Steam, and Steam tells you when the build is ready.

Did everyone who requested access get into the last playtest?

The studio's recap reports over 150,000 requests and more than 85,000 players, so the number of places was smaller than the number of requests.

What can I play right now instead?

The free Steam demo, which has been available since September 30, 2026, with the tutorial, two selected missions, and the newer Next Fest co-op mission; the full game is listed for October 29, 2026.
