S.O.N.A.R. Demo Download: Free Steam Next Fest Build
The S.O.N.A.R. demo is a free Steam download: where the button is, what the Next Fest build includes, and how it differs from the playtest.

Table of Contents
The S.O.N.A.R. demo is a free download from the game's Steam store page — no key, code, or playtest signup is needed. Open the official Steam page, find the demo block on the page, and use its Download button to install the demo build. The demo has been downloadable since 30 September 2026, when Abylight Studios announced it was "dropping now" ahead of the 29 October launch.
Getting the demo
The store page carries a dedicated demo section with its own download control, separate from the wishlist and purchase area (the full game itself is not purchasable before release). The same page shows the planned release date of 29 October 2026 and a countdown of roughly a week as of 22 October 2026.
A few practical notes:
- You need a Steam account and the Steam client or mobile app; the page nudges signed-out visitors to open it in the Steam app before wishlisting or downloading.
- The demo is listed as a Windows build — the Steam page lists Windows as its platform, with Windows 10 64-bit minimum and Windows 11 64-bit recommended. Steam Deck compatibility is listed as "Unknown" on that page.
- The store page does not state an end date for the demo download. The Next Fest window it was promoted in ran 19–26 October 2026, but the announcements do not say the demo disappears when the festival ends.

What the demo actually contains
The demo is a slice, not the full game. When it launched on 30 September 2026, Abylight described it as the single-player tutorial plus two selected missions — "the perfect appetizer" before release.
The Steam Next Fest version, announced on 19 October 2026, expanded that:
- A brand-new co-op mission built for 1–4 players, not available in earlier builds.
- The single-player tutorial with dedicated training stations.
- Progression and customization: uniforms, weapons, food and hats unlock as you play, previewing the full release's progression.
That announcement also carries the demo changelog for build v0.9.44.0 (a near-identical v0.9.41.0 changelog is posted in the Steam community hub): the navigation station was reworked to show a geographical view alongside the mission map, the weapon station gained a decoy launch to evade enemy torpedoes, the second demo mission was swapped for a new one, and controller vibration was added for gamepads.
One inconsistency worth knowing: the store's short blurb advertises a "1–6 player co-op" game, while the "About This Game" section describes up to four crew members managing nine stations, and the Next Fest demo mission is described as 1–4 players. Treat the demo's co-op mission as a small-crew affair.
Demo, playtest and full game are three different things
Players searching for a "demo download" sometimes land on older instructions for the playtest. Abylight's July 2026 post, Join the S.O.N.A.R. playtest on Steam, describes scrolling to a "Join the S.O.N.A.R. Playtest" section and clicking "Request Access", after which Steam notifies you when access is granted. That was the limited playtest route, and the final playtest ran 24–28 September 2026. It is not the demo: the demo is a plain store download rather than a granted request, so there is no approval step to wait on.
For reference, the paid release is separate again — the full game unlocks on 29 October 2026 at $9.99 / €9.39 with an additional 15% launch discount, per the developer's 5 October price announcement. The demo itself is free.

If the download button is not where you expect
These are general Steam-side checks rather than confirmed game features:
- Confirm you are signed in — the S.O.N.A.R. page shows a signed-out notice and may hide or disable some store controls.
- Try the desktop client or the Steam mobile app if the browser view looks incomplete.
- If a store page region or language variant behaves oddly, switch back to your usual store region and reload.
- Demo downloads occasionally sit in a separate library entry from the main game; if it installed but you cannot find it, check your library list rather than the store page.
